Marine Survey Preparations

Prior to conducting a survey on a vessel, the boat or yacht owner and purchaser should see that a few items are taken care of and in order. Here are a few items that should be taken care of to help facilitate an expeditious marine survey.

• Make arrangements with the boat’s owner to gain access to the vessel.
• The vessel should be presented in a clean and tidy manner.
• Paperwork and miscellaneous gear should be readily available.
• If a bottom inspection is being conducted, haul-out should be arranged and completed.
• If access to areas is required beyond what is visible, qualified personnel should be hired to make those areas accessible.

Capt. Jenkins works and protects the interest of the party who retains said surveyor. In the case of a pre-purchase survey, this is the buyer of the vessel. In the case of a valuation, insurance or damage survey, this is the owner of the vessel.

The cost of a survey is charged based on several factors from the length of the vessel, to location, size and type of the vessel. Also the type of service being performed is a consideration. There may also be charges added for mileage.
